What’s next for Parkway Plaza? Downtown Napa shakeup leaves tenants seeking new homes
Take a good look at Napa’s Kohl’s building — because it won’t be there forever. Developers have asked the city of Napa for a permit to raze the recently closed department store building at 1116 First St.

The demolition of the Kohl’s building will be the first major physical change in the redevelopment of the rest of Parkway Plaza, at the corner of Main and First streets in downtown Napa.

The plaza previously included five tenants. The Kohl’s department store and Jax White Mule diner closed in late March. Miyamo Boutique will move to another location on First Street. The Don Perico and Napa Noodles restaurants remain open — for now.

The center is owned by Coombs Street LLC of 300 Venture Group of Danville. A draft development agreement between the city of Napa and the property owner is being negotiated and should go before the Planning Commission and City Council in the coming months for consideration, according to city Planning Manager Ricky Caperton.

Longtime locals will remember that Kohl’s was originally home to Mervyns department store. And before that, it was an Albert’s department store. The Napa Mervyns opened in April 1962.

In the early 1970s, the city created a redevelopment project, tearing down several blocks of stores so that Mervyns could expand into a new First Street building. The Napa Mervyns closed in 2008, a few months before the chain’s liquidation, and a Kohl’s store took its place the following year.
